KMU Held a Forum on World Health Day

Chien-Jen Chen: The pandemic is like a dark cloud inlaid with golden trims

Taiwan will be reborn

Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) organized a forum titled "Globalization and Health Inequalities - From WHO to COVID-19" on April 7, 2022, with the theme of "Building A Fairer, Healthier World". From the standpoint of Taiwan, the Forum reviewed the global health trends in the post-COVID-19 era and invited speakers, including Academician CHIEN-JEN CHEN, the former Vice President of Taiwan, Chung-Liang Shih, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, SHU LING TSAI, the Deputy Director-General of the National Health Insurance Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, TIMOTHY T. Y. HSIANG, the Secretary-General of the International Cooperation and Development Fund, YING-WAI WONG, the Professor at the School of Medicine, Tzu Chi University, and YA-WEN CHIU, the Professor at the KMU Department of Public Health, to introduce the "World Health Day" from various perspectives.

ERIC K. CHEN, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of KMU, quoted the book "Let Us Dream: The Path to a Better Future" by Catholic Pope Francis. He urged us to perceive Covid-19 as a call from God to respond to all the inequalities of our time caused by self-centeredness. He encouraged us to take on the mission of "making the world a better place", become "co-creators of the world" and take the elimination of inequality as a shared responsibility. CHUN-YUH YANG, the President of KMU, emphasized that his philosophy of "  internationalization" is to achieve the sense of internationalization here in Taiwan. President YANG expected to discuss the impacts of the pandemic on the society through the World Health Day Forum. In his talk, Academician CHIEN-JEN CHEN, the former Vice President of Taiwan, described the pandemic as a dark cloud inlaid with golden trims. He believed that Taiwan would become more confident, democratic, diverse, and open in the post-COVID-19 era.
