On 5th June 2018, Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, the Acting President of Mahidol University (MU) led his 2 Acting Vice Presdients--Dr. Suraporn Loiha and Dr. Mondhakarn Oprasertsawat--to visit KMU together.  On behalf of both universities, Prof. Ching-Kuan Liu, the President of Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), and Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya signed their MoU on Academic Cooperation and Student Exchange Agreement at the same time to open a new collaborative page between KMU and MU.

The exchange activities between KMU and MU could be traced back to the 20th century.  KMU’s 4th President, Prof. Hsien-Chen Hsieh, was a well-known medical and parasitic disease advisor to the World Health Organization of the United Nations.  Acting as a consultant to WHO, he met the experts in Tropical Medicine from MU and became friends.  In addition, one of KMU’s faculty members, Dr. Jih-Jin Tsai, earned her master’s degree in Tropical Medicine from MU in 2006.  After coming back to KMU, Dr. Tsai organized an international conference on Tropical Medicine in Kaohsiung by inviting scholars from Mahidol University in Thailand and Herdelberg University in Germany

In May 2016, Dr. Darunee Soorukram of MU, who was invited by Dr. Hui-Ting Chen of KMU Department of Fragrance and Cosmetic Science, visited KMU to give a co-teaching course with Dr. Chen together.  While in October 2017, KMU hosted “QS Subject Focus Summit on Medicine” in Kaohsiung.  It was our honor that Vice President Ruengpung Sutthent, Dean Chanuantong Tanasugarn, and other MU friends joined the Summit together.  And Dean Chanuantong Tanasugarn was one of the speakers.

Followed by several exchange activities in 2018, both KMU and MU established their formal partnership through signing the MoU and Student Exchange Agreement on 5th June 2018.  We do hope to form a solid collaboration between the two universities in the coming future and look forward to more exchange activities in Medicine and Healthcare Science hereafter.
