University of the Philippines Signed MoU with KMU

With the introduction by Chair ProfessorEing-Ming Wu, Shu-Te University, Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) became a member of Taiwan-Philippines Academic Networking Platform (TPANP) at Kindness Hotel of Qisian on May 23, 2106.  Joining the memberships was succeeded by constructing partnership with University of the Philippines (UP) on August 10, 2016.  Apart from KMU as a member in TRANP, there were five universities including University of the Philippines System (UP), SHU-TE University (STU), National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU), National Ping-Tung University of Science and Technology (NPUST), and National Kaohsiung Normal University (NKNU).

KMU’s President, Professor Ching-Kuan Liu and Professor Gisela P. Concepcion, the Vice President for Academic Affairs presented the signing ceremony and on that occasion both addressed to proceed substantial collaborations such as medical education, hospital management, health care by telemedicine, students exchange, research collaboration in the future.  Vice President of UP, Prof. Gisela P. Concepcion led her crew of 11 faculty members to Kaohsiung on August 9.  Our honored guests were well and warmly received by KMU’s faculty members and staff. 

Besides Professor Gisela P. Concepcion, the list of our honorable guests were Dr. Luis G. Sison, Director, Technology Transfer and Business Development Office; Dr. Gonzalo Serafica, Consultant, Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO); Dr. Melinda dP. Bandalaria, Chancellor, UP Open University; Dr. Carmencita D. Padilla, Chancellor, UP Manila  ; Dr. Eva Maria Cutiongco-Dela Paz, Vice Chancellor for Research and Executive Director, National Institutes of Health, UP Manila; Dr. Agnes Mejia, Dean, College of Medicine, UP Manila; Dr. Gerardo D. Legaspi, Director, Philippine General Hospital; Dr. Leo Cubillan, Director, Philippine Eye Research Institute; Dr. Alvin B. Marcelo, Director, National Telehealth Center and Chief of the Medical Informatics Unit, UP Manila; Dr. Rohani Cena, Research Faculty, Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), UP Manila. 

KMU hosted the campus tour and show the delegate from UP to different spots such as Chung-ho Memorial Hospital and Center for Research Resource and Development.  The delegates of UP was impressed by the operating mode and effect oftelehealth care center.  They were also interested in liver transplant as well as neck surgery.  Besides, since the Philippines’ national health research institute was located on UP campus, they would like to visit similar research center on KMU.  And they were surprised by KMU research accomplishment while they were visiting general research center and animal laboratory. Hopefully, more research collaboration could be approached.
