Interdisciplinary model! Chun-Yuh Yang's article

"A Man Cannot Live Without Hobbies" was included in the Chinese textbook

On February 11, 2022, the senior high and junior high school students in Taiwan started their new semester. When they opened their new textbooks, they found the article "A Man Cannot Live Without Hobbies" written by Chun-Yuh Yang, the President of Kaohsiung Medical University. The article quotes a host of famous sayings, poems, and examples to highlight the importance of  having hobbies. Han Lin Publishing Co., Ltd. included this article in the Chinese textbook for the junior high school students due to its extraordinary insights. Another essay, "The Taste of Braised Eggs," has been included in booklet for the Chinese Reading Literacy Project.

It is mentioned in the article "A Man Cannot Live Without Hobbies" that a person without hobbies is not a genuine person. A person can be judged through his hobbies. Confucius, whose hobby is learning, expressed “when I am learning something new, I forget to eat, to worry, and don’t feel like I am getting old.” This mentality is only achievable when learning is the ‘hobby’.” President Yang obtained his undergraduate and Master Degrees from the Department of Public Health, National Taiwan University, and  Ph.D. degree from the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Yale University. Although he majored in public health, President Yang likes writing articles and commentaries related to current affairs. In 2019, he published "The Collected Writings of Jun Yi" consisting of a collection of 56 articles previously published in the news media. The articles "A Man Cannot Live Without Hobbies" and "The Taste of Braised Eggs" were selected from this book. His second book, "Yuxin's Anthology," was published before the 2022 Lunar New Year. His mentor Chien-Jen Chen, the former Vice President of Taiwan, and Eric K. Chen, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Kaohsiung Medical University, both wrote the prefaces to recommend this new book.

It is worth noting that President Yang donated all the royalties from his two books and articles included in textbooks to the  Kaohsiung Medical University's "Scholarship for Realizing Dreams". Through this action, President Yang hopes the disadvantaged students will be able to study at ease. President Yang said that he would continue to write, "I write articles encompassing sense and sensibility. In my articles, I express love in a broad sense, including love for family and friendship, as well as love for nation and society.".
