FDA Says it’s Seized ‘Thousands of Units’ of Counterfeit Ozempic FDA

The US Food and Drug Administration warned Thursday that it’s seized “thousands of units” of counterfeit versions of the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic from the US drug supply chain, and it’s urging suppliers, pharmacies and patients to use caution. Five people have gotten sick in connection with the products, but none of the cases has been serious, the FDA said. The FDA warns pharmacies, health care systems, wholesalers and patients to double-check their semaglutide products to make sure they are the real thing. One-milligram injectable Ozempic products with the lot number NAR0074 and serial number 430834149057 on the box should not be used. The agency and drugmaker Novo Nordisk are testing the fakes to determine whether they’re dangerous and to identify what the substance is. The pen label, carton, information for patients and health care professionals, and needles that come with the injectors are also counterfeit, the FDA said. The needles’ sterility can’t be confirmed, so using them could lead to infection.

Unhappy or Anxious? How You Sleep May be the Cause

Not getting enough sleep or sleeping poorly can greatly affect your mood and mental health, according to a new study analyzing 50 years of research. Cameron Diaz: ‘We should normalize separate bedrooms’ “We found that all forms of sleep loss — total sleep deprivation, partial sleep loss, and sleep fragmentation — resulted in emotional changes. The strongest and most consistent effect was that sleep loss reduced positive mood,” said co-lead author Cara Palmer, assistant professor and director of the Sleep and Development Lab at Montana State University in Bozeman. “We also found that sleep loss increased feelings of anxiety,” Palmer said in an email. “When experiencing emotional events, people were also more likely to report reacting differently than people who were well-rested. “Specifically, they reported feeling less emotional arousal, which is when we feel the intensity of certain emotions in our body, suggesting that overall people felt more muted emotional responses after sleep loss.”

This Raphael Masterpiece isn’t Quite What it Seems

A 500-year-old Raphael painting is partially the work of another artist, according to a new study. A team led by scientists from England’s University of Bradford used artificial intelligence to determine that the face of Joseph in the “Madonna della Rosa” (“Madonna of the Rose”) was painted by someone other than the Renaissance master. Raphael is one of the best known Renaissance masters and lived from 1483 to 1520. The Italian is best known for works such as “The School of Athens” and “Three Graces.” Hassan Ugail, director of the Centre for Visual Computing and Intelligent Systems at the University of Bradford, told CNN Thursday that he’d developed an algorithm to recognize genuine Raphael paintings, with 98% accuracy. It analyzes 4,000 parameters such as brush strokes, color palette and hue to determine whether a painting is a genuine Raphael, explained Ugail. “Madonna della Rosa,” which hangs in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, has long been subject to debate, said study co-author Howell Edwards, emeritus professor of molecular spectroscopy at the University of Bradford, in a press release.

這位義大利人以《The School of Athens》和《Three Graces》等作品而聞名。

Starbucks’ CEO Wants People to Stop Protesting its Stores over Israel War in Gaza

Starbucks chief executive Laxman Narasimhan on Tuesday said people protesting the company and disrupting its stores over the Israel-Hamas war were being misled by false information spread online about the company’s positions. “We see protestors influenced by misrepresentation on social media of what we stand for,” Narasimhan said in a letter to Starbucks employees and customers. “Cities around the world – including here in North America – have seen escalating protests. Many of our stores have experienced incidents of vandalism,” he said. “We have worked with local authorities to ensure our partners and customers are safe.” The letter is a way of attempting to untangle Starbucks from controversies related to the war. Starbucks has also tried to distance itself from pro-Palestine positions taken by Starbucks Workers United, a union for Starbucks workers, that have angered some pro-Israel supporters.

Cancer-fighting CAR-T cells could be Made Inside Body with Viral Injection

Cancer-fighting CAR-T cells could be Made Inside Body with Viral Injection

Researchers are closing in on ways to produce CAR T cells in the body, raising hopes that the notoriously expensive and bespoke cancer therapies might one day become more accessible. In CAR-T treatment, immune cells called T cells are removed from the person receiving treatment, engineered to target cancer cells and reintroduced to their body. The process has yielded dramatic recoveries from advanced forms of some blood cancers, but its high price and technical difficulty have placed it out of reach for many people. Results presented at the American Society of Hematology annual meeting in San Diego, California on 11 December suggest that people undergoing treatment might eventually just get an injection of a virus that infects T cells. The virus would then insert the genes needed to guide the T cells to tumour cells. ”You don’t need to take the cells out, you don’t need to purify them,” says John DiPersio, a transplant immunologist and oncologist at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, who says that he was sceptical that the approach would work until he heard the talks at the meeting. ”They convinced me that it’s possible.”

Polar Bear Fur-inspired Sweater is Thinner Than a Down Jacket — and Just as Warm

A sweater knitted from a fibre that mimics polar bear fur offers as much warmth as a down jacket, despite being one-fifth as thick, according to a study published today in Science. The fibre — made from a light, synthetic material known as an aerogel — maintains its heat-trapping properties even after being stretched, washed and dyed. The proof-of-concept fibre might one day be used for clothing that need to be lightweight and durable — such as sportswear, military uniforms and spacesuits — without the need for animal fur or down, says study co-author Weiwei Gao, a materials scientist at Zhejiang University in China. Studies have found that aerogels are among the best heat-locking materials around, and they have been used as insulation in buildings. But fibres made from aerogels are often too brittle and fragile to be weaved into wearable textiles, and they tend to lose their insulating properties after washing and in humid environments.
