New Study Finds the Brain May ‘Stay Alive’ Even 1 Hour After the Heart Stops

Up to an hour after their hearts had stopped, some patients revived by cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) described clear memories of experiencing death that occurred while they were seemingly unconscious, according to a study published online September 14, 2023, in the journal Resuscitation. Investigators also found that 40 percent of the patients who received brain monitoring during CPR showed brain activity consistent with consciousness — in some cases, even after 60 minutes of resuscitation. “Although doctors have long thought that the brain suffers permanent damage about 10 minutes after the heart stops supplying it with oxygen, our work found that the brain can show signs of electrical recovery long into ongoing CPR,” said senior study author Sam Parnia, MD, PhD, an associate professor in the department of medicine at NYU Langone Health in a press release.

The current study analyzed the direct and indirect effects of temperature on the oldest group in China. This study considered population data from Nantong City, China, as it has the highest proportion of older people among 340 cities. To determine how temperature change affects this population, all-cause mortality and temperature/humidity data were collected between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2017. This data was categorized into three groups based on age, including 65-79 years (young-old), 80-89 years (middle-old), and 90+ years (oldest-old). The minimum mortality temperature (MMT) for the elderly population in Nantong increased with age, which suggests that climate change and aging increase heat-related mortality and reverse the trend of cold-related mortality. The study findings indicate that climate change, which is defined as an increase in extremely high temperatures and a decrease in moderately low temperatures, will continue to cause an increase in mortality.

Its striking appearance has made it one of the most recognizable attractions in Japan – even President Joe Biden visited earlier this year. However, that popularity has come with a downside. Hatsukaichi has long struggled with overtourism, prompting officials to implement a tourist tax, which came into effect on Sunday. The tax was originally scheduled to roll out in 2021 but was delayed by the pandemic. Each visitor to Miyajima, the island access point for the shrine, is now charged 100 yen (67 cents). If a traveler is interested in making multiple visits, they can purchase a 500 yen ($3.33) pass that is valid for one year. “We feel the need to create a hospitable environment for tourists, while securing the livelihood of islanders,” says Shunji Mukai, an official of the city’s planning department. “We hope that tourists will become stakeholders who join us to protect Miyajima by sharing responsibilities.” “We hope that future visitors will become guardians of the island just like the residents,” reads a mission statement posted on the initiative’s website. “Why don’t we start doing what we can do now with pride? An island that enshrines the gods, we will cherish it for another thousand years.”

His revenue comes from negotiating deals with cruise companies and adding travel experiences and onboard programming for new and established remote workers. A record 600 participants are expected on the upcoming transatlantic cruise, and his revenue to date nears €2m ($2.13m; £1.72m). There's more to being a digital nomad than the images of coconut-toting workers sprawled on beaches with laptops. And a quiet network of businesses is tapping into the need for resources and logistics that make the lifestyle possible. They're setting up nomads with virtual coworking spaces, events, mindset coaching and practical assistance to help them tackle the issues many nomads struggle with.

It will mean businesses are no longer allowed to supply some items like polystyrene cups and plastic cutlery. “This new ban is the next big step in our mission to crack down on harmful waste,” said Environment Minister Rebecca Pow. The government already has “world-leading bans” and taxes on other forms of plastic, she added. The new rules will “protect the environment and help to cut litter - stopping plastic pollution dirtying out streets and threatening our wildlife”. First announced in January this year, it is part of a goal to eliminate all “avoidable plastic waste” by 2042. The rules across the UK vary with Scotland introducing a similar policy last year and Wales due to introduce a ban later this month.

Even I remained trapped, and 80 percent of the city is without power. … I don’t know where God found so much water. It’s like the story of Noah’s Ark.”
