There’s a McDonald’s replacement in Russia — with a strangely familiar logo

In a March 12 trademark filing, Uncle Vanya’s yellow and red logo looks almost identical to the iconic Golden Arches of McDonald’s, but tilted 90 degrees to the right. Though none of these new restaurants have opened yet, the plan is apparently to take over existing shuttered McDonald’s restaurants. The new eatery takes its name from the 19th-century play “Uncle Vanya” by Russia’s Anton Chekhov. “McDonald’s announced they are closing. Well, okay, close. But tomorrow in those locations we should have not McDonald’s, but Uncle Vanya’s,” Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of Russia’s lower house in parliament, said. “Jobs must be preserved and prices reduced.” Officials have also said Russia can ignore patents owned by entities from countries that Moscow sees as hostile, while Russian President Vladimir Putin last week endorsed a plan to nationalize foreign-owned businesses that have left the country. --from Washington Post

Washington Post

British Museum agrees to remove Sackler name from galleries over opioid crisis

The British Museum will remove the Sackler name from galleries, rooms and endowments following global outrage over the role the family played in the opioid crisis. The Sackler name has been removed in recent years from wings and galleries at institutions including the Louvre in Paris and the Serpentine Gallery in London. The British Museum said it had mutually agreed on the move with trustees of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Foundation, which has supported the museum for more than 30 years. “The British Museum is grateful for the Foundation’s past support, and the Trustees appreciate their cooperation as we now move the museum into a new era and present our incredible collections in different ways for new audiences,” museum Chairman George Osborne said in a statement. --from Euronews

Green Mediterranean Diet could be a ‘Win-win’ for Health and the Planet

Green Mediterranean Diet could be a ‘Win-win’ for Health and the Planet

People who eat a traditional Mediterranean diet have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A series of clinical trials now suggests that a “green” Mediterranean diet — which avoids all meat and provides extra greens — may be even better for human health. Climate scientists believe that one of the most impactful things that people can do for the environment is to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy products. If the diet catches on, the benefits for planetary health could be equally impressive. --from Medical News Today

Medical News Today

It's time for spring cleaning, and unhealthy social media accounts need to go, experts say

It's time for spring cleaning, and unhealthy social media accounts need to go, experts say

Many of us spend hours a day in front of a screen. Shouldn't it be joyful? Unfortunately, it isn't always so easy. Prolonged screen time disrupts sleep and gives us a big hit of dopamine, often called the "feel-good" neurotransmitter -- so much of it that if you go overboard, your body could compensate by making less of your own. Scrolling through social media can add the harmful impacts of comparison, unrealistic standards and the spread of misinformation. Like your home, your social media account may need a spring cleaning to stay a happy, safe space, which often means unfollowing toxic accounts. --from CNN News, article with video

First-of-its-kind Global Catalog of Bird Shapes Yields Ecological ‘Gold Mine’

First-of-its-kind Global Catalog of Bird Shapes Yields Ecological ‘Gold Mine’

A team of 115 researchers from 30 countries, led by evolutionary biologist Sheard’s Ph.D. adviser, Imperial College London ecologist Joseph Tobias, has published anatomical measurements of all 11,009 living bird species—not just passerines such as robins, but everything from ducks and penguins to vultures and ostriches. “It’s a gold mine,” says geneticist Nancy Chen of the University of Rochester, who was not involved in the project. The open-source data set, called AVONET, debuts this month in a special issue of Ecology Letters along with papers describing its value for studying bird evolution and ecology, as well as the impact of changes in climate and habitat on vulnerable species. --from Science News

Science News

DNA-spiked Gel Heals the Skin Wounds of ‘Butterfly Children

DNA-spiked Gel Heals the Skin Wounds of ‘Butterfly Children

People born with skin so fragile that a simple touch can create wounds that may never fully heal are known as “butterfly children”. Now, in a small study of patients with the rare inherited disease epidermolysis bullosa (EB), researchers have used a DNA-carrying gel to help mend their skin. The approach is just one of several new experimental gene therapies for the condition. But it is by far the simplest: A gel loaded with viruses ferrying a therapeutic gene is spread on the skin, like an ointment. Its developers say it is the first topical gene therapy to clear clinical testing, and it is arguably the most successful [such therapy] to date. --from Science News

Science News
