Top 5 foods with the highest prebiotic content

Prebiotics, which can be thought of as food for the microbiome, are different from probiotics, which contain live microorganisms. Both can potentially benefit microbiome health, but they work in different ways. Studies have linked higher prebiotic intake with improved blood glucose regulation, better absorption of minerals like calcium, and markers of improved digestive and immune function. Cassandra Boyd, a master's student at San José State University and Assistant Professor John Gieng, PhD. estimated the prebiotic content of thousands of food types by using preexisting literature to find out the foods offering the highest prebiotic content. According to the study, foods that pack the greatest prebiotic punch are dandelion greens, Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, leeks, and onions.

Adopting 8 healthy habits could add decades to a person's life

A new study involving over 700,000 U.S. veterans reports that people who adopt eight healthy lifestyle habits by middle age can expect to live substantially longer than those with few or none of these habits. The eight habits are: being physically active, being free from opioid addiction, not smoking, managing stress, having a good diet, not regularly binge drinking, having good sleep hygiene, and having positive social relationships. According to the results, men who have all eight habits at age 40 would be predicted to live an average of 24 years longer than men with none of these habits. For women, having all eight healthy lifestyle factors in middle age was associated with a predicted 21 additional years of life compared to women with none of these habits.

Chocolate prices soar as cost of cocoa rises 25%

World heads into a potential third year of supply deficit as major growing regions inundated by flooding. In bad news for chocolate lovers, confectionery makers are increasing prices as cocoa beans trade at near decade highs with no respite on the horizon. Food companies have been grappling with rising costs for the main chocolate ingredient, with cocoa prices up more than 25% in a year amid widespread flooding in some of the world’s main growing regions. Analysts at Rabobank noted that sugar, another major ingredient in chocolate, was also priced at historically high levels. “Some of our favorite types of chocolate in Australia have risen in price by around 10 to 20%, so we’ve seen inflation in the category and that could continue if these cost pressures are going to increase,” associate analyst Pia Piggott said.

The world's cheapest Domino's pizza is in inflation-hit India. It costs $0.60

The 49-rupee ($0.60) pizza in India, Domino's No.1 market outside America, is the tip of the spear in its fight against rampant inflation that's squeezing profits and pricing out many customers, according to the CEO of its franchisee there. The company wants to "own that price point", said Sameer Khetarpal, confirming the stripped down, seven-inch cheese pizza with a "sprinkle" of basil and parsley is Domino's cheapest anywhere. "You are coming to the store or open the app, because there is a 49-rupee callout," he said. "Customers are going to eat out less because prices are higher everywhere." In Shanghai, by comparison, Domino's cheapest savory pizza is priced about $3.80, and in San Francisco about $12, online menu prices show. Reuters interviews with six executives and 12 store managers revealed how Domino's and other global fast-food giants like Pizza Hut and Burger King are being forced to change tactics to weather rampant inflation in the market of 1.4 billion people.

Some African birds follow nomadic ants to their next meal

Ant-following birds are well studied in the neotropical Americas. In Africa, however, “people have seen birds follow ants, but nobody has really looked” to see whether the animals have a specialized relationship, says [Patricia] Rodrigues from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. The first step to figuring that out is finding driver ant nests. Since 2020, Rodrigues has spent weeks at a time scrutinizing the ground for ants in a forest near Ciudad de la Paz. When she finds them, she knows to keep her distance. For their latest study, Rodrigues, Powell and colleagues placed cameras at the entrances of seven driver ant nests and recorded about 80 hours of footage. “Birds come up to a nest entrance and check it out, and fly into the direction of where the ants are raiding that day.”

What would happen if we stopped fishing?

What would happen if we stopped fishing?

For decades after the Bikini Atoll experiments, the islands were a place of ghosts – other than caretakers, no humans have lived there since the 1950s. So, when Palumbi rolled off the boat into the atoll's central lagoon in 2016, together with his colleague Elora López-Nandam, they had no idea what they would find. The pair were diving in Bravo Crater, a basin 75m (246ft) deep and 1.5km (0.9 miles) wide in the north of the island chain. "It's mind-blowing," says Palumbi. Despite battling the effects of radiation, which is thought to have created a population of mutant sharks missing their second dorsal fins, the reef was very much alive. And the fish were giants – at least, compared to those you would find in places that are regularly plundered for their fish. This is the most obvious consequence of abandoning fishing – there would be more fish, and they would be much bigger than modern generations are used to.
