Urban areas are more affected by depression than rural areas, but dense inner-city centres are not the worst place to live. A new study has found that residents of suburbs are more at risk of depression. According to existing research, people living in urban areas in Western Europe and the US find themselves facing a 39% increased risk of depression compared to those who live elsewhere. You might think that the difference could be explained by high buildings, noise, stress and air pollution. But a new study published in Science Advances has found that some urban areas are better than others... like city centres. Even though it's in the dense inner-city areas that you generally find the most noise, air pollution and high buildings, people living in sprawling residential suburbs are more likely to be depressed than their downtown counterparts.

According to the experts, applying after-sun could do your skin even further harm if you don’t take a thorough look at the ingredients. That’s why it may be a wise idea to opt for an aloe vera gel instead. “After-sun formulas tend to have rich, thick consistencies containing oils, which create an emollient barrier on top of the skin trapping in the heat in the upper layer of the epidermis and exacerbating the inflammation and ‘burn’ feeling on your face,” Michaella Bolder, Time Bomb skincare expert tells to The Independent.

Scientists in the US have developed a device that can harvest humidity in the air to create a clean electricity supply. A team of engineers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been making clean electricity from thin air. According to the university, “nearly any material can be turned into a device that continuously harvests electricity from humidity in the air”. In the research paper, it is explained, “air humidity is a vast, sustainable reservoir of energy that, unlike solar and wind, is continuously available”. The key lies in nanopores - a nanometre-sized hole that enables air and water to pass through “any material” and ultimately create surface charge.

Planetary scientists now know how thick the Martian crust is, thanks to the strongest Marsquake ever observed. Last May, the entire planet shook with a magnitude 4.7 quake that lasted more than six hours. The measurement was based on data from NASA’s InSight lander, a stationary seismometer that recorded waves rippling through Mars’ interior for four Earth years. InSight recorded seismic waves from the quake that circled Mars up to three times. That let the seismologist Doyeon Kim of ETH Zurich and his colleagues infer the crust thickness over the whole planet. Researchers report in a paper to appear in Geophysical Research Letters, on average, the crust is between 42 and 56 kilometers thick, That’s roughly 70 percent thicker than the average continental crust on Earth.
